He shot his stepson in the head: a family conflict in the Mykolaiv region ended in murder

In the village of Balovne in Mykolaiv district, police detained a 62-year-old man suspected of killing his 38-year-old stepson. According to law enforcement, during a quarrel he shot his wife’s son in the head with a hunting shotgun. The victim died in a medical facility.

This reports the communications department of the Mykolaiv Oblast Police.

The incident occurred during the day on 16 July 2026 on the territory of one of the gardening associations. A local resident contacted the police and reported that her husband had shot her son in the head.

Officers from police station No.6 of the Mykolaiv District Police Department, investigators and specialists from the forensic laboratory arrived at the scene.

According to preliminary investigation data, a 38-year-old man came to visit his mother and stepfather. A quarrel broke out between him and the 62-year-old homeowner, who had long been on bad terms.

During the conflict the man took a hunting shotgun and shot his stepson in the head. After that the suspect, together with his wife, drove the wounded man to the hospital in their own car.

Despite medical efforts, saving the 38-year-old man was not possible.

Police seized the hunting shotgun from which, according to investigators, the shot was fired, as well as spent cartridges. The weapon was officially registered to the suspect.

The 62-year-old man was detained in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. Investigators, under the procedural guidance of the prosecutor’s office, informed him of suspicion under Part 1 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – intentional murder.

The suspect faces up to 15 years in prison. A court is expected to decide on his pretrial measure soon. The pretrial investigation is ongoing.
