In Mykolaiv, a young man is suspected of murdering his 20-year-old dormitory neighbor

In Mykolaiv, a 20-year-old local resident is suspected of murdering his acquaintance. According to the investigation, after the crime he told people that the girl had allegedly gone missing, and the next day took part in her search.

The body of the 20-year-old Mykolaiv woman was found on 29 June 2026 in a reed thicket on the bank of the Southern Bug in the Varvarivka neighborhood. According to the preliminary conclusion of the forensic medical examiner, she died as a result of mechanical asphyxia due to strangulation.

As reported by the Mykolaiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, on the evening of 28 June a verbal argument broke out between the girl and her acquaintance during a walk. According to the investigation, the young man strangled the victim, left her body in the reeds and fled to the dormitory where he lived next to the deceased. After that he told acquaintances that the girl had allegedly gone to the store and not returned. The next day the suspect, together with a female acquaintance, came to the riverbank supposedly to search and pretended that he had accidentally found the body.

The police previously reported that it was the suspect who contacted the emergency hotline 102 with a report about the girl’s disappearance. During operational-search measures, law enforcement officers established his probable involvement in the crime. The prosecutor’s office noted that during an investigative experiment with the participation of a defense lawyer and witnesses the suspect confessed to the crime and showed the circumstances of the murder. He was notified of suspicion under part 1 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The court chose a preventive measure for the man in the form of detention without the possibility of bail. For intentional murder he faces seven to fifteen years of imprisonment. The pre-trial investigation continues.
