In Odesa on July 4, 2026 the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with graduates and cadets of the Institute of Naval Forces of the National University “Odesa Maritime Academy”. The head of state congratulated the servicemen on the upcoming Navy Day and thanked the young people who, during the war, chose to serve in the naval branch.

During the conversation they raised issues of developing the Ukrainian fleet, naval education, and building new ships. The President said that modern anti-submarine corvettes were ordered in Turkey, but according to the initial plans Mykolaiv was also supposed to be involved in their construction. The full-scale Russian invasion prevented this plan from being implemented in Ukraine.

Speaking about pre-war shipbuilding plans and the prospects of returning orders to Mykolaiv, Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted:

“We have modern corvettes that, according to our strategy, were ordered to be built in Turkey. And it was not only Turkey; there was also Mykolaiv. But during the war it is impossible to build this in Ukraine. We will continue this construction after the war. Right now we already have two corvettes,” — Zelenskyy said.

These are the anti-submarine corvettes “Hetman Ivan Mazepa” and “Hetman Ivan Vyhovsky”, which are being built in Turkey. In addition, Ukraine plans to have two more corvettes, landing boats for the marines, a flotilla of mine countermeasure vessels, and to develop multipurpose sea drones Sea Baby and Magura.
