Sandu insists: the withdrawal of Russian troops from Transnistria is an item in negotiations between Ukraine and Russia
Chisinau calls on the EU to take the Transnistrian issue into account and, through the OSCE, is seeking the release of detained citizens
Moldovan President Maia Sandu said that including the issue of withdrawing Russian troops from Transnistria in potential agreements to end the war in Ukraine is necessary; this became known on Sunday, 28 June, from a report by Pro TV Chișinău, which Point cites.
The head of state explained that during possible negotiations to end the Russo‑Ukrainian war the European Union may take the Transnistrian issue into account, and official Chișinău consistently raises this topic in dialogue with its European partners.
According to Sandu, the key threat to the region remains the illegal presence of Russian military units in Transnistria, and it is to eliminate this problem that the Moldovan authorities are engaging with EU institutions.
She also reminded separately that Transnistria is an integral part of Moldova, and decisions about the country’s accession to the European Union are made in Brussels, not in Moscow.
Sandu also reported that the government continues to pursue the release of Moldovan citizens detained on the left bank of the Dniester, negotiating with the administration of Tiraspol through OSCE mediation.
