Signal flare in the trash: a garbage truck caught fire while working in Mykolaiv

In Mykolaiv, during the collection of household waste, garbage in the refuse truck’s hopper caught fire. The incident occurred today, 15 June 2026, while following a scheduled route at the corner of Bedzaya and Arkasivska streets.

This was reported by the Mykolaiv City Council.

According to the communal enterprise “Mykolaivkomuntrans”, the fire started while mixed household waste was being loaded from containers. The fire broke out directly in the special vehicle’s hopper.

The company’s employees reacted promptly to the dangerous situation: the waste was immediately unloaded from the refuse truck, after which rescuers were called to the scene.

Thanks to coordinated actions by the refuse truck crew and specialists from the State Emergency Service (SES), the blaze was quickly localized and extinguished. After the work was completed, the area was cleaned up and restored to proper sanitary condition.

According to preliminary information, the fire may have been caused by a signal flare that was among the waste in the mixed-waste container.

The communal enterprise “Mykolaivkomuntrans” reminded residents that dangerous items must not be thrown into ordinary household waste containers.

“We urge everyone to handle waste responsibly. It is forbidden to throw fire- and explosion-hazardous items, pyrotechnics and ammunition into the containers,” — the communal enterprise said.

Such actions can lead to fires, damage to municipal equipment and create a real threat to people’s lives and health. In wartime, when dangerous items, debris or pyrotechnic devices may remain in the city, careless handling of them becomes especially risky.
