The decision to designate a year of the UPA could have halted military aid to Poland
There is no public confirmation from the Polish authorities in the materials provided
The delivery of a large-scale military aid package to Ukraine has been suspended because of a decision by the Lviv Regional Council, according to a source familiar with the situation. The decision in question declared 2027 the year of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) and Roman Shukhevych, provoking a sharp reaction in Poland.
At the same time, the materials cited contain no public confirmation from the Polish authorities that the aid delivery has actually been halted. The information is based on the source’s account.
The council members voted at a time when Poland was preparing the package for delivery to Ukraine. The source directly links the pause in deliveries to the regional council’s actions:
“Because of their irresponsible actions, delivery of this package is now suspended,” the source familiar with the situation claimed (translated from Russian).
The regional council’s decision prompted reactions from:
- the Polish Embassy;
- Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz;
- Prime Minister Donald Tusk;
- the Office of the President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki.
According to the source, the consequences of the council members’ decision could affect not only bilateral relations but also military cooperation between the countries.
“Active work is underway through back channels to resolve a problem that was created out of nothing,” the same source said, describing the parties’ current efforts to settle the situation (translated from Russian).
