Vladyslav Vitoldovych Matskevych, a submariner, retired 1st-rank captain and former chief metrologist at the Admiral Makarov National University of Shipbuilding, has died in Mykolaiv. He devoted many years to naval service, researching the history of the fleet and preserving the city’s historical heritage.
He shared a longstanding friendship with the M. L. Kropyvnytskyi Central City Library. He first met its staff around 20 years ago. From his very first visit, they discovered a shared interest in the past of Mykolaiv and a desire to preserve the memory of its maritime history. Over time, Vladyslav Matskevych became a regular visitor and an active participant in cultural and local history events.
An important part of this collaboration was adding to the library’s collections. Almost every time he visited, he brought materials related to the city and the fleet. He donated:
- books from his personal collection;
- video materials;
- photographs;
- newspaper articles;
- other historical records.
The materials he donated are now held at the Library’s Literary Museum and in its digital archive. They have become part of Mykolaiv’s documentary heritage.
Another area of Vladyslav Matskevych’s creative work was his collection of maritime stories, “Fleet Tales”. Presentations of all three editions were held at the Mykolaiv Central City Library over the years.
The former submariner was always glad to take part in events about the history of the navy, shipbuilding and prominent people from Mykolaiv. His contributions went beyond sharing memories: he also initiated projects to preserve the city’s historical and local heritage.
To the library staff, Vladyslav Matskevych was an engaging conversationalist, a man devoted to his work and a profound expert on maritime history.
