For uninterrupted water supply: a new water main has been laid in central Mykolaiv
Repairs on Soborna Street are expected to be completed by the end of October
In the center of Mykolaiv, on Soborna Street between Admiralska and Spaska, the new water pipe has been fully laid and filled with water. Repairs on the section are still underway. The aim of the upgrade is to ensure reliable, uninterrupted water supply to nearby buildings.
Along a stretch of about 300 meters, the worn-out water main is being replaced with a polyethylene pipe with a diameter of 125 mm. The project also includes:
- construction of 11 reinforced-concrete manholes;
- installation of new shut-off valves;
- installation of fire hydrants.
To minimize excavation and preserve the city’s landscaping, the network is being laid using trenchless technology—horizontal directional drilling.
“The pipe has now been fully laid, and the new pipeline has been filled with water. We plan to complete the work entirely in the coming weeks and move on to restoring the landscaping and paving,” said Artem Kolesnyk, executive director of the contractor, Ukrspetsoborudovaniye LLC.
Funding is provided by the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark. The work and materials are estimated to cost 2.7 million hryvnias.
This section is among the most vulnerable in the city: Mykolaivvodokanal included it on the list of sites requiring priority repairs. Its upgrade is one of more than 20 projects funded by DRC.
“We understand that this is only a small part of what needs replacing, as the pipes are in very poor condition. But we have to start somewhere. We are also currently carrying out a project to restore the sewer collector on the grounds of the Strasse market in Namiv. We conduct daily monitoring visits to make sure everything is progressing properly,” said Oleh Matynha, a water supply recovery specialist with the DRC office in Ukraine.
Work on Soborna Street began in mid-September. Completion is scheduled by the end of October.
