Bullet to the stanchion, pistol like a wedge — a botched contract killing in Korabelnyi
For firing through a windshield near a house in the Korabelnyi District, Oleksandr B. was sentenced to 10 years for a contract killing attempt
Shevchenko District Court of the city of Mykolaiv convicted Oleksandr B. to 10 years of imprisonment with confiscation of property for an attempt at intentional murder committed for pecuniary motives, on order and by prior conspiracy of a group of persons. The attempt occurred in the evening of 14 January 2026 near building No. 16 on Korabeliv Avenue in Mykolaiv. The court issued the verdict on 28 September 2026.
Waited with a converted TT
As the court established, at about 19:00 on 14 January 2026 Oleksandr B. acted on the order of another person, whose materials have been separated into a separate proceeding. Another accomplice is also being prosecuted in a different criminal case.
According to the indictment, the goal was to kill Heorhi P. for pecuniary motives.
For the attack Oleksandr B. prepared a semi-automatic pistol converted from a full-size TT mock-up of 7.62×25 mm caliber and loaded with live ammunition.
The man waited at a distance of approximately 25 metres from building No. 16 on Korabeliv Avenue.
When Heorhi P. pulled up to the building in a Mercedes-Benz ML 270 and remained at the wheel, the attacker approached the car and fired one shot through the windshield in the direction of the driver’s seat.
The bullet hit the front left pillar of the body and, after ricocheting, changed trajectory. The victim was not injured.
After the first shot the weapon jammed. Oleksandr B. could not clear the malfunction, so he was unable to continue shooting. After that he left the scene. It was precisely because of the ricochet and the weapon malfunction that the murder was not brought to completion for reasons beyond the attackers’ control.
Admitted guilt in court
During the trial Oleksandr B. fully admitted his guilt, confirmed the circumstances set out in the indictment, and expressed remorse.
Since the defendant and the victim did not dispute the factual circumstances, the court did not re-examine all the evidence.
The actions of Oleksandr B. were qualified as a completed attempt at intentional murder for pecuniary motives, on order and by prior conspiracy of a group of persons.
Was serving in the military at the time of the attempt
The verdict states that at the time of the crime Oleksandr B. was serving in the military as a mechanic-driver of a mechanized detachment and held the military rank of “soldier”.
The court recognised sincere remorse as a mitigating circumstance. An aggravating circumstance was the commission of the crime using the conditions of martial law.
Previously received 4 years for illegal handling of weapons
On 28 May 2026 the Darnytskyi District Court of Kyiv convicted Oleksandr B. under part 1 of Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine to 4 years of imprisonment, but released him from serving the sentence with a probation period of 2 years.
Since the attempt in the Korabelnyi District occurred earlier, on 14 January 2026, i.e. before the previous verdict, the court took both criminal proceedings into account when determining the final punishment.
Ultimately — 10 years with confiscation
For the attempted murder Oleksandr B. was given 10 years of imprisonment with confiscation of property. After taking into account the previous sentence, the final punishment remained the same.
The man was detained on 16 June 2026. The time spent in custody until the verdict takes legal effect will be credited toward the sentence.
In addition, Oleksandr B. will be ordered to pay UAH 17,756.78 for the costs of conducting forensic examinations.
The verdict may be appealed to the Mykolaiv Court of Appeal within 30 days from the date of pronouncement.
