A woman was hospitalized after eating wild mushrooms in Mykolaiv region

In the Mykolaiv region a woman was hospitalized after consuming mushrooms she personally gathered in the forest in the Pervomaisk region. She was admitted to the hospital on September 28 with a preliminary diagnosis of “mushroom poisoning.” The patient’s condition is assessed as moderate.

This recent case of poisoning was reported by the Mykolaiv Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. According to specialists, the woman ate the collected mushrooms on September 27. The next day she felt weakness and dizziness and sought medical help, after which she was hospitalized.

The center emphasizes: mushrooms accumulate pollutants, including heavy metals. Therefore, when collecting them they recommend following these rules:

• Do not collect mushrooms near roads, railway tracks, industrial enterprises, or on contaminated sites.
• Leave mushrooms if there is even the slightest doubt about their edibility.
• Do not pick specimens that are too young, old, or damaged.

Specialists say the safest choice is commercially cultivated mushrooms purchased from official retail networks.

Poisoning can manifest with the following symptoms:

• Nausea and vomiting.
• Abdominal pain and diarrhea.
• Dizziness and fever.
• In severe cases — impaired consciousness, shortness of breath, and seizures.

Worsening of condition does not always begin immediately after eating: the first signs can appear after several hours or even days.

If you feel unwell after consuming mushrooms, specialists urge not to self-medicate and to seek medical help by calling 103. Leftover mushrooms or dishes made from them should be preserved: they can help determine the cause of the poisoning and choose treatment.
