An 18-year-old resident of Mykolaiv stabbed a man several times in Mykolaiv

At night on 26 September at the intersection of Soborna Street and Central Avenue in Mykolaiv, a 55-year-old man was wounded with a knife during a conflict. The victim, with a stab wound to the chest, was hospitalized, and the person involved in the attack, an 18-year-old local resident, was identified by the police the same day.

According to the police, a verbal argument arose between the victim, who has mental disorders, and a young man previously unknown to him. The conflict escalated into a scuffle, after which the suspect stabbed the man several times.

At the scene and working to establish the circumstances were:

• officers of Police Station No. 1 of the Mykolaiv District Police Department;
• investigators of the investigative department;
• operatives and staff of the forensic laboratory of the regional police headquarters;
• canine handlers and other services.

To reconstruct the sequence of events and identify the person involved, law enforcement analyzed CCTV recordings, including those connected to the “Safe City” system. With the support of analysts from the Criminal Analysis Department, the person was identified by operatives of the Criminal Investigation Department and Police Station No. 1 of the Mykolaiv District Police Department.

During an urgent search of the young man’s residence, forensic experts collected, and investigators seized, a knife and other pieces of physical evidence. They were sent for forensic examination.

In the evening of 26 September the suspect was detained in procedural order in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. With the prosecutor’s agreement, he was notified of suspicion under Part 1 of Article 121 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — intentional grievous bodily harm.

The suspect faces up to 8 years in prison. A court is expected to decide his pretrial measure soon.

The 55-year-old victim continues to receive treatment in a medical facility. Doctors assess his condition as satisfactory. The pretrial investigation is ongoing.
