The water tariff in Mykolaiv will not be increased until access to clean water is guaranteed for everyone

The water supply tariff in Mykolaiv will remain at the 2019 level for now. Mayor Oleksandr Senkevych explained this by saying that the water utility still cannot guarantee the supply of fully treated water to every consumer.

The mayor spoke about the tariff on September 23 during a meeting of the executive committee of the Mykolaiv City Council. The new treatment facilities of the pipeline have already been launched, but the city continues to flush the pipes. Because of this, a stable supply of fully treated water to all consumers will take some more time.

Oleksandr Senkevych explained the city authorities’ decision as follows:

We are deliberately not raising the water supply tariff today; it remains at the 2019 level. Even though the new system is operating, the pipes are still being flushed, and so on — we cannot yet guarantee the delivery of fully treated water to everyone for some time. Therefore, until this happens, the water tariff will not change.

Maintaining the current cost of the service is financially difficult for the city. About 50 million hryvnias are allocated from the budget each month to support KP «Mykolaivvodokanal» and cover the enterprise’s financial gap.

According to the mayor, the water utility’s expenses have increased due to electricity, which the enterprise buys at market prices, as well as wages for employees. Their current level no longer corresponds to the tariff set in 2019.

Today we subsidize it from the budget. Instead of paying salaries, utilities, and carrying out routine repairs, we are allocating money to the water utility to eliminate the financial shortfall.

At the same time, the executive committee decided to raise the tariff for wastewater disposal. Oleksandr Senkevych emphasized that the operation of the sewerage system, unlike water supply, does not depend on water quality.

Today we are simply suffocating and must at least raise the wastewater tariff. Wastewater disposal works with any water, so we made this decision.

From October 1, wastewater disposal in Mykolaiv will increase by 24 hryvnias. The new tariff will be 41.25 hryvnias per cubic meter.

The director of KP «Mykolaivvodokanal», Hennadiy Izyumov, previously promised that the water supply tariff for the population would not change until the end of 2026. The former head of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, Vitaliy Kim, also stated that he would do everything possible to prevent centralized drinking water supply for residents from becoming more expensive.

At the same time, Oleksandr Senkevych noted that the city now pays for water from the new pipeline based on meter readings, which may affect the final cost for consumers. KP «Mykolaivvodokanal» admitted that after launching the new treatment facilities the tariff could reach 100 hryvnias per cubic meter.

The mayor also explained that the current tariff for residents does not cover the operating costs of KP «Mykolaivvodokanal», which leaves the enterprise without sufficient capacity for full operation and development.
