In Mykolaiv, work on the preliminary design for the renovation of Sportyvnyi Square has been completed. It is being carried out by the company “NIBULON” in partnership with the Mykolaiv City Council. The company announced the completion of the concept on September 8 — the birthday of its founder, Hero of Ukraine Oleksii Vadatursky.
The project was developed by the team of Ukrainian architect Oleg Drozdov. The concept envisions a modern public space with a memorial area dedicated to Oleksii Vadatursky.
The memorial section is based on themes of agricultural production and shipping, the ability to create large systems and unite people around them, and the connection to Mykolaiv, the land, and the water.
According to the authors, the renovated square will consist of four main zones:
- a memorial space;
- a green area with pergolas;
- a plaza with water;
- a children’s play area.
Together they are intended to transform the currently open area into a more intimate, greener, and cozier urban space. The memorial section will be located at the beginning of Central Avenue.
An important part of the concept is preserving existing trees and supplementing them with new plantings adapted to the climate of the South of Ukraine.
The authors note that the future square will not have a single prescribed use. It will be able to host people during commemorative events, provide cooling by the water on hot days, serve as a route through the city, and be a place for children’s play, meetings, walks, or quiet relaxation.
The architecture is intended to create conditions for varied uses of the space, and its future life will be shaped by the residents of Mykolaiv themselves.
The preliminary design will later be presented to the public. Residents will be able to review the concept of the future square, the architectural and landscape solutions, and ask questions to the authors.
