On September 6 a local resident contacted the police and reported damage to a grave at the cemetery in the Varvarivka neighborhood in Mykolaiv.

At the scene, law enforcement officers recorded damage to the tombstone slabs at the grave indicated by the complainant, as well as at two additional burial sites.

During investigative and operational actions, police established that a 35-year-old local resident was involved in damaging the tombstones. According to the man, he was intoxicated when he had a sudden outburst of aggression. It was then, he explained, that he damaged the tombstones.

Investigators opened a criminal proceeding under Part 1 of Article 297 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — for desecration of a grave and other burial sites motivated by hooliganism.

The article’s penalty provides for up to three years imprisonment. Currently the question of notifying the suspect of suspicion and selecting a preventive measure for him is being decided. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
