1 September in the history of Mykolaiv is not only the start of the school year. On this day the city produced agricultural machinery, opened an educational institution of culture, laid down one of the largest ships of its time, and the Korablev District received a new sports complex.
1 September 1932: “Plow and Hammer” produced its first combines
The former Donsky brothers’ factory, which at that time was called “Plow and Hammer”, released its first Soviet-era products — two-row sugar beet harvester combines. Later the enterprise became known as the “Dormashina” factory.
1 September 1954: the College of Culture began operating
In Mykolaiv a technical school for training cultural and educational workers began operations — today’s Mykolaiv Professional College of Culture and Arts. Classes began for 120 students in the specialties “cultural and educational work” and “library science”. The first director was Olga Danylchenko.
1 September 1982: the cruiser “Riga” was officially laid down at the Black Sea Shipyard
On the largest slipway of the Black Sea Shipbuilding Yard there was the official laying of the heavy aircraft-carrying cruiser of project 1143.5 under the original name “Riga”. During construction the ship was renamed “Leonid Brezhnev” and “Tbilisi”, and finally received the name “Admiral Kuznetsov”.
1 September 2020: School No. 48 received a new sports complex
A modern sports complex was opened at School No. 48 in the Korablev District. It combined a football field with artificial turf, a basketball court, running tracks, stands, lighting and video surveillance. Construction began in 2019, and about UAH 8 million was allocated from the city budget. Korabelov.info.
1 September 2023: the Korablev District bid farewell to defender Dmytro Sypko
By the Church of the Holy Spirit in the Korablev District, the 20-year-old serviceman Dmytro Sypko — a native of Mykolaiv and a former pupil of School No. 40 — was laid to rest. The defender was killed on 27 August 2023 in the Luhansk region. Sources: Korabelov.info report
1 September 1939: World War II began in Europe
Nazi Germany invaded Poland. This attack is considered the beginning of World War II in Europe; two days later the United Kingdom and France declared war on Germany.
