Attack on Kyiv region: 27 killed in Bucha district after Russian strike and powerful detonation

Among the victims is the head of the community; about 50 houses were damaged

In the Bucha district of Kyiv Oblast, emergency response continues following a Russian strike that the enemy carried out on the evening of 28 August 2026. After a Russian drone struck or fell on the premises of an enterprise in the village of Mila, a large fire broke out and powerful detonations began. As of the morning of 29 August, the death toll has risen to 27 people, and that figure may not be final.

The head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, Timur Tkachenko, reported that among the dead is the head of the Dmytrivka community, Taras Didych. According to him, the official was one of the first to go to the scene to help people. Emergency rescue and firefighting operations are still underway at the site. Rescuers are dismantling damaged structures, extinguishing fire hotspots, inspecting buildings and the adjacent area, and continuing search operations. According to the latest data from the Kyiv RMA, 42 people sustained injuries of varying severity, including 4 children. All received medical assistance; 7 of the injured were hospitalized.

A total of 381 people have already been evacuated from the danger zone, including 59 children. An operational headquarters is working in Dmytrivka, where residents can seek help, receive hot meals and psychological support. The scale of the damage is still being clarified. As of the morning, roughly 50 residential buildings are known to have sustained damage of varying degrees. Temporary accommodation is being provided for people whose homes have become uninhabitable.

On the evening following the Russian attack, the fire spread to private residential areas. Initially, fires were reported in at least 5 houses and a food service establishment. Due to the danger, traffic on the M-06 “Kyiv – Chop” route between the 15th and 32nd kilometer was temporarily closed.

According to preliminary investigation data, at about 20:10 on 28 August a Russian drone struck or fell on the premises of one of the enterprises in the village of Mila; the drone type is being determined. A large fire then broke out and detonations began. Law enforcement established that explosive items and materials were stored on the enterprise’s premises. The prosecutor’s office is checking the legality of their placement and storage, as well as the actions of officials responsible for the enterprise’s operations. A pre-trial investigation has been opened on the facts of waging an aggressive war under Art. 437 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine and possible official negligence under Art. 367 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

Prime Minister Serhiy Koretsky sharply spoke out about this tragedy:

“Unfortunately, it can already be stated that the terrible tragedy in Vyshneve did not serve as a lesson. In the fifth year of the full-scale invasion, making the same mistakes over and over is criminal negligence. And all those responsible, without exception, must receive severe punishment so that such situations do not happen again,” – Koretsky.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, commenting on the tragedy on 29 August, stated that responsibility must be borne not only by the Russian aggressors but also by those who may have allowed dangerous storage of munitions near residential areas:

“Since last night, liquidation of the consequences of the Russian drone strike has been underway in the village of Mila near Kyiv. Headquarters have been deployed on site to help people. All necessary services have been involved. SES units are operating – more than 300 personnel. There was a strike on a warehouse with subsequent detonation. Unfortunately, there is significant destruction to the surrounding infrastructure: residential houses, a care home for the elderly and people with disabilities were damaged. As of now it is known that 27 people have died. One of the dead is the head of the Dmytrivka community, Taras Didych. He was rescuing people. My condolences to the families and relatives. Tens of people were wounded. More than 370 people have already been evacuated, and the evacuation is ongoing. Reports were received from Prime Minister Serhiy Koretsky and Interior Minister Ivan Vyhivskyi. Those who allowed this must be held accountable for their decisions. Investigators from the National Police and the Security Service of Ukraine are conducting a pre-trial investigation; a criminal case has been opened under the article on official negligence. There are regulations: munitions cannot be located near houses or other residential development. Appropriate conclusions will certainly be made. There were also strikes on our regions during the night – Odesa region, Dnipro region, Kyiv region, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, Kherson, Kharkiv, Mykolaiv, Donetsk, Chernihiv. There were over 260 strike drones, and also “banderols.” There were virtually continuous attacks by strike drones on Kyiv. Ukraine cannot be alone in finding solutions to defend against such strikes, and I thank everyone who helps with additional support packages and sanction measures against Russia.”

The investigation must establish not only all the circumstances of the direct Russian strike, but also why explosive items were stored at the enterprise near residential development and whether the actions or inaction of responsible officials could have significantly increased the scale of the tragedy.
