In Mykolaiv region a driver fatally struck a female cyclist and fled: police are searching for the driver
A 53-year-old woman was found dead on the road between Horokhivka and Vynohradne
In Bashtanka Raion of Mykolaiv Oblast, law enforcement are investigating a fatal road accident and are identifying the driver who, after striking a female cyclist, fled the scene. The regional police reported this.
The accident occurred on the morning of 21 August. At around 4:50, citizens notified law enforcement that on the road between Horokhivka and Vynohradne of the Snihurivka community lay the body of a woman. A damaged bicycle was next to the deceased.
Investigators from the investigative department of the regional police headquarters, forensic experts, criminal investigation officers, members of the investigative-operational group and a forensic medical examiner arrived at the scene. The identity of the deceased was established: she was a 53-year-old local resident.
According to preliminary data, the woman was riding a bicycle when she was hit by the driver of a vehicle not yet identified. The injuries proved fatal. After the collision, the driver left the scene.
Investigators opened a criminal case under part 2 of article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. This concerns violation of traffic safety rules or vehicle operation by a person driving a vehicle, if this caused the death of the victim.
Under this article, the penalty is imprisonment for up to eight years. The court may also deprive the offender of the right to drive vehicles for up to three years — as an additional punishment or on its own.
Currently, the police are establishing the identity of the driver, the make and other details of the vehicle involved in the collision, and are clarifying all the circumstances of the tragedy. A number of examinations have been ordered in the case.
