1501 appeals to the language ombudsman in six months: Kyiv — 507 complaints, main violators — websites

1378 complaints concerned violations of the language law; last year their number increased by 26%

During the first half of 2026, the Secretariat of the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language received 1501 citizen complaints regarding compliance with language legislation.

The Secretariat clarified that of these, 1378 complaints concerned possible violations of the Law ‘On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as the State Language’, which is 12 complaints more compared to the same period last year, and published the corresponding statistics on its website, providing a breakdown by regions and areas of violations.

The most reports came from Kyiv507. The top five territories with the highest figures also included Odesa region — 254, Kharkiv — 166, Dnipropetrovsk — 122 and Kyiv region — 43.

By sector, the most complaints concerned violations in website sections and online representations — 364 complaints, in advertising and on signage — 229, during service provision — 213, in education — 98, in information about goods and services — 98, in the field of culture — 76, in the work of government bodies — 70, in the media — 69, and in healthcare — 27.

For context: in the first half of 2025 there were 1410 complaints recorded, which is 348 more than in the same period of 2024, while overall for 2025 the number of complaints increased by 26% year-on-year.
