Readers’ comments of “Korabelov.Info” under one of the editorial pieces unexpectedly drew attention to another, but long-familiar to residents, problem — the accessibility of the ATB supermarket on Bohoyavlensky Avenue in the Korabelnyi District of Mykolaiv. According to contributors, there are steep steps at the entrance to the store that are difficult to use for people with limited mobility, shoppers with wheeled shopping bags, and parents with baby strollers. At the same time, the lift installed near the store, readers claim, is essentially not working.

Reader Albina drew attention to the steep steps and the lack of a real possibility for people who have difficulty moving to safely access the premises.

“Just look at these steep steps to the ATB supermarket in the Korabelnyi district. There is no way to go down or up properly with a wheeled shopping bag, a baby stroller, or a wheelchair; there is no convenient ramp for them. They installed a lift for some reason, but it never works. This store should be ashamed that it has not provided customers with basic access to the premises. And it’s strange that trade is allowed in a place where barrier-free rules for visitors are not followed.”

Another contributor, AlexandRovna, said she asked store employees to use the lift for a low-mobility visitor but was refused.

“I asked them to lift a low-mobility woman by elevator. They said they don’t turn the elevator on because it ‘disturbs’ the building’s residents.”

In response, Albina noted that possible noise from the equipment cannot be a reason why some visitors effectively lose access to the store.

“And does it not ‘disturb’ anyone that a person in a wheelchair or a woman with a baby stroller cannot properly enter and exit the ATB supermarket in the Korabelnyi district? If this lift squeaks or makes noise, it should simply be repaired. This is just an incompetent manager at the store.”

The situation looks especially odd given the very purpose of installing the lift. The equipment seems to be there, but according to shoppers, it cannot be used. As a result, accessibility exists only formally: the lift can be shown during an inspection, but it does not help daily those for whom it was supposed to be installed. The problem concerns not only people with disabilities. Elderly shoppers, people recovering from injuries, parents with small children, pregnant women, and visitors with heavy purchases are forced to use the steep steps. Readers raise a logical question: who is responsible for the lift’s operability and why a retail outlet that serves a large number of people daily cannot provide basic and safe access to its premises.

The editorial board of “Korabelov.Info” is ready to publish the position of the ATB supermarket administration regarding the reasons the lift is not used, its technical condition, and the timelines for restoring its full operation.
