Russian drone crashed into the roof of a multi-story building in Romania: two injured
An explosion in an apartment on the 10th floor; residents evacuated on their own; Romanian radars also detected other aircraft near the border
On the night of 28 to 29 May, during another Russian attack on Ukraine, a drone violated Romania‘s airspace and fell onto the roof of a residential building in the city of Galați; the fire was extinguished, two people with abrasions were given assistance, and the incident was reported by the Romanian Ministry of Defence and the ISU service.
The Romanian defence ministry clarified that strikes on civilians and infrastructure were carried out near the river border with Romania, and the drone’s incursion into Romanian airspace was detected by radar.
“The drone entered Romanian airspace, which is monitored by radar in the southern part of the city of Galați, and crashed into the roof of an apartment building, after which a fire broke out. Specialized teams from IGSU and other ministry structures, the Romanian intelligence service and the police are working on the scene,” the Ministry of Defence of Romania said.
Radars also recorded the movement of other drones near the country’s airspace; at 01:19 two F‑16 fighters and an IAR 330 SOCAT helicopter were scrambled to patrol and provide cover.
“The pilots had permission to engage targets for the entire period of the alert,” the Ministry of Defence of Romania added.
The Emergency Response Service ISU confirmed the incident: the drone fell on a residential building, causing an explosion and a fire in an apartment on the 10th floor.
“Forces and means of ISU Galați arrived at the scene to eliminate the consequences of the incident and ensure the safety of the area, with support from other Interior Ministry units and specialized SRI teams. Two people who were in the apartment that caught fire evacuated on their own. No casualties have been reported so far,” the ISU Galați Emergency Response Service said.
Rescuers later clarified that two injured people with abrasions are receiving medical assistance on site, and the fire in the residence has been extinguished.
