Ducks instead of footballers: the regional council has taken up the flooded stadium in Korabelnyi district

Deputies of the Mykolaiv Regional Council said that the flooding of the Sports School No. 5 stadium in the Korabelnyi district of Mykolaiv, which prevents children from training properly, may be related to water releases into the Vitovka. The issue was discussed on May 22, 2026 at a meeting of the regional council’s relevant committee.

The committee chair Yevhen Horburov showed deputies a video of the flooded Sports School No. 5 stadium in the Korabelnyi district. He emphasized that because of the water on the field, children have effectively lost the ability to train normally. In the video, local residents said that the stadium area has turned into a body of water, and the water, they say, comes in from the side of the Vitovka when the water utility discharges water. On camera people also noted that instead of a training field there is now a swamp where ducks, seagulls and sometimes herons swim and visit.

The head of the regional sports department Mykhailo Nikolaiev said that the problem is not new and has recurred for many years. According to him, the area is flooded by groundwater, and the stadium has not been repaired precisely because of the complexity of this situation. Also, Mykhailo Nikolaiev noted that even Valentyn Haydarzhi, when he worked as deputy mayor and coordinated the housing and communal services sector, spoke about the almost impossibility of solving this problem. In addition, the official reported that a drainage system had previously been attempted to be installed near the Sports School No. 5 stadium, but this did not completely resolve the issue.

The committee chair Yevhen Horburov pointed out that the situation has not been resolved for many years, even though this concerns a stadium in a large residential area of Mykolaiv. He expressed hope that the new management of “Mykolaivvodokanal” will be able to propose a technical solution so that the flooding does not recur.

For the Korabelnyi district this story is especially painful: it is not just about a flooded plot, but about sports infrastructure for children in a large residential area. While officials talk for years about groundwater, drainage and technical difficulties, the sports school is forced to look for places to hold its classes.
