In Mykolaiv, on the grounds of the Central City Cemetery, a new columbarium — a specialized structure for storing urns with the ashes of the deceased — has been officially commissioned. The facility was built along the central pedestrian avenue approximately 100 meters from the cemetery’s main entrance. It houses 156 niches for urns, and the total cost of the project amounted to 2.7 million hryvnias.

From now on, city residents can use an alternative method of burial after cremation. The municipal enterprise «Mykolaiv Funeral Service» explains: the company provides a full range of funeral services — from arranging cremation to delivering the urn and placing it in the columbarium or burial.

The director of the municipal enterprise «Mykolaiv Funeral Service» Serhiy Vaselega explained the procedure for using the new facility.

“If people arranged the cremation themselves, they need to submit an application for placing the urn and all documents confirming the cremation. After that, the family may choose a niche and carry out the installation of the urn in accordance with the established procedure.”

He also emphasized that the placement of the urn in the columbarium is free of charge for the deceased’s relatives.

“Only the manufacture and installation of a plaque with specific engraving at the customer’s request is charged.”

The city council notes that creating the columbarium should become part of the modernization of the city’s funeral infrastructure and corresponds to modern approaches to organizing burials.
