Why KABs aren't reaching us: Kim explained what is holding back Russian aviation
The threat remains, but it's risky for platforms carrying guided aerial bombs to approach the Mykolaiv region
For about two months now, Russian forces have not used guided aerial bombs against the Mykolaiv Oblast. According to the head of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration Vitalii Kim, the reason is not the occupiers’ “good intentions”, but the region’s geography and the work of Ukrainian air defense. About this Vitalii Kim said May 6, 2026 on the air of “Novyny.Live”.
The head of the region explained that for strikes with KABs Russian aviation needs to approach at a distance dangerous for them. In the case of Mykolaiv, this creates a risk for carrier aircraft, since they can be reached by Ukrainian air defense. According to Kim, the Russians had previously tried to use such munitions against the oblast, but there were only a few cases. Vitalii Kim noted that currently the use of KABs against the Mykolaiv Oblast is not being recorded.
“The use of KABs in Mykolaiv Oblast is absent. They tested KABs on us quite a long time ago, there were a couple to a few. This is due to the geographical location – it’s difficult to approach, our air defense can reach carriers of KABs. Therefore, for two months KABs have not been used in Mykolaiv,” Kim said.
At the same time, the situation in the oblast remains dangerous: Russian forces continue to attack Mykolaiv with drones, missiles, artillery and other means of destruction. Therefore, the absence of KAB strikes does not mean the threat to the region has disappeared.
