A serviceman was sentenced to more than five years for stealing someone else’s property and trying to sell it for scrap in Mykolaiv
The convicted man admitted his guilt and must pay compensation to the victim
In Mykolaiv, a serviceman was sentenced to five years and two months in prison for stealing from a house and attempting to steal property from another home. The court set the final sentence taking into account an earlier ruling by the Pervomaisk City District Court dated August 14, 2026.
The circumstances of the case and the court’s decision are set out in the documents published on reyestr.court.gov.ua.
The man committed the first theft on April 4, 2026. Using a picked key, he entered someone else’s house. The stolen jewelry included:
- a gold ring;
- a chain;
- a wedding ring;
- a cross pendant;
- a pendant;
- ruby earrings;
- a bracelet;
- a pearl necklace.
In addition to the jewelry, the serviceman took an air rifle and 2,300 hryvnias in cash. The total value of the stolen property was 82,185 hryvnias and 15 kopecks.
The next incident took place on April 25, 2026, at another house in Mykolaiv. The man was living there by arrangement with the owner’s son. The house was being prepared for sale after shelling.
The accused carried property worth a total of 6,983 hryvnias out of the house and into the yard:
- a Zanussi washing machine;
- a gas stove;
- a cast-iron bathtub;
- several homemade metal radiators.
He called a vehicle to take the items away and sell them for scrap metal. However, he was unable to carry out his plan: other people spotted him. The property remained in the yard and was later returned to its owner.
During the trial, the serviceman fully admitted his guilt and expressed remorse. He explained that he had sold the gold jewelry at Kolos Market for 50,000 hryvnias, and the air rifle through OLX.
The victim of the first theft filed a claim for compensation of 82,185 hryvnias in material damages and 50,000 hryvnias for moral harm. The accused fully agreed to her demands. The court ordered him to pay her the full amount of the established property damages, including the kopecks, and granted her claim for moral compensation.
The court considered the admission of guilt and remorse mitigating circumstances. No aggravating circumstances were established.
The man was found guilty of burglary committed under martial law and attempted burglary. Separate sentences were imposed for each incident:
- for the completed theft — five years and one month in prison;
- for attempted theft — five years in prison.
The recovered gold ring with three stones was returned to the victim. The court left the items from the other house with their owner.
The verdict may be appealed to the Mykolaiv Court of Appeal within 30 days.
