A 50-year-old native of Donetsk, who had served in the Russian army for more than 2 years, was detained after arriving in Ukraine. According to available information, the woman wanted to obtain a Ukrainian international passport so she could travel to European Union countries. She now faces punishment on suspicion of treason.

According to the Security Service of Ukraine, the woman was detained at a hotel in the city of Kovel, in Volyn. Before that, she had entered Ukraine via Belarus, using Ukrainian documents.

According to law enforcement officials, before Russia’s full-scale invasion, the woman worked as a nurse at a psychiatric hospital. However, in February 2022, she voluntarily joined the 91st Separate Rifle Regiment of the 1st Army Corps of the aggressor country’s Southern Military District and served until August 2024.

During her detention, officials seized documents that, according to law enforcement, confirm her service in occupying military formations. These included a Russian passport, military documents of the Russian Federation and the so-called “DPR,” as well as a Russian combat veteran ID.

The woman was notified that she was suspected of treason. The court ordered her held in custody without the right to bail. Under Ukrainian law, treason committed under martial law is punishable by up to life imprisonment, with confiscation of property.

Thus, the woman’s attempt to obtain a Ukrainian document so she could later travel to Europe resulted in her arrest and criminal proceedings over her alleged service in the army of the aggressor state.
