Ukrainian border checkpoints may be moved to Moldova due to Russian strikes
Chișinău and Kyiv discuss expanding joint border controls
Ukrainian border guards may work on the territory of Moldova: Chisinau and Kyiv are discussing the possibility of relocating Ukrainian checkpoints there. The goal is to reduce threats related to the war in Ukraine and Russian strikes near the Moldovan border.
Due to regular Russian attacks on Ukrainian border areas, Moldova withdrew its border guards and customs officers from four checkpoints located on the territory of Ukraine. The countries are now considering an arrangement under which Ukrainian border guards would also work on the Moldovan side.
“As I have already said, there are currently two border crossings operating under agreements reached with the Ukrainian side. Of course, in the future, over the medium term, we will also assess other crossings, depending on the level of risk posed by incidents that have occurred,” said Moldova’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Daniella Misail-Nichitin.
For now, the countries are only considering a possible expansion of joint border control. Decisions on other checkpoints will be made in light of the security situation.
Russian strikes are already affecting border crossings: as a result, checkpoints periodically operate with restrictions.
