Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in an interview that he would run in the presidential election if the vote took place before the war ends. He linked his participation under those circumstances to his responsibility to defend the country.

“If it takes place during the war—of course. It is my responsibility; I have to defend my country from the beginning to the end of this war,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

According to the president, Ukraine would need about six months to prepare for an election after the war ends.

If the vote is held before the war ends, however, a ceasefire of at least 60 days would be necessary. This period would be needed to prepare legislative changes and ensure the necessary security conditions.

“We need a fair election; we need the military to be able to vote. If you think I don’t want elections, that’s not true,” President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed.

Zelenskyy has previously said that Ukraine is ready to hold a presidential election if Russia agrees to such a truce. However, the Kremlin rejected the proposal, saying it was ready to halt strikes for only one day—on the day of the vote itself.
