Cigarette robbery in Mykolaiv region: court sentences robber to up to seven years
The verdict for the robbery in Snihurivka has not yet entered into force
In Mykolaiv Oblast, a court sentenced an 18-year-old resident of Kherson Oblast to up to seven years in prison for robbing and assaulting two residents of the Snihurivka community. The police reported the sentence on October 14, 2026. The court found the defendant guilty, but the ruling has not yet entered into force.
The attack took place on May 22, 2026. That day, a 27-year-old resident of Snihurivka filed a robbery report with Police Station No. 2 of the Bashtanka District Police Department.
The investigative team that arrived at the scene established what had happened. The complainant was walking down Hetmana Sahaidachnoho Street with his 31-year-old acquaintance when a car stopped beside them. An unidentified man got out and asked if they had any cigarettes. When they said no, he assaulted them both and took their bags, which contained a mobile phone, tablet, headphones, and personal belongings. The attacker then fled.
During оперативно-розшукових заходів, the police established that an 18-year-old resident of Kherson Oblast was involved in the crime. He had been driving around the city in a car matching the victims’ description. Law enforcement officers reconstructed the attack in full and proved the man’s involvement.
Later, investigators seized the stolen property, detained the suspect in accordance with the law, and notified him that he was suspected of robbery involving violence and committed under martial law. The court subsequently ordered him held in pretrial detention.
After receiving the findings of forensic medical examinations, investigators also opened a pretrial investigation into the injuries inflicted on the complainant. In July 2026, police investigators completed the pretrial investigation and sent the indictment to the prosecutor’s office. The prosecutor’s office submitted it to the court for consideration on the merits.
The court found the defendant guilty under the following provisions of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:
- Article 186, Part 4 — robbery involving violence, committed under martial law.
- Article 125, Part 1 — intentional infliction of minor bodily injury.
The sentence is imprisonment for up to seven years. The Snihurivka Department of the Bashtanka District Prosecutor’s Office supervised the proceedings.
The ruling has not yet entered into force. Under Article 532 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine, a first-instance court decision enters into force once the prescribed period for filing an appeal has expired, provided no appeal has been filed. If the sentence is appealed, it will enter into force after the appellate court issues its decision, unless it is overturned.
