Russia’s monthly losses estimated at over 50,000 — roughly ten times higher than Ukraine’s
It is difficult to independently verify the estimates: Russia does not disclose its official losses
Russian army losses over the past month in the war against Ukraine are estimated at more than 50,000 killed and wounded. The estimate for Ukrainian forces over the same period is around 5,000 people. The figures were cited by a senior NATO official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
According to his estimate, as many as 28,000 Russian troops may have been killed. However, these figures are not confirmed statistics: the authorities of Russia do not publish official data on their army’s losses, making independent verification of the figures difficult.
The NATO official explained that the Russian command is seeking to advance on the front by sending troops into so-called kill zones. These are areas where drones, mines, artillery and other defensive assets are concentrated.
The situation facing Moscow is being compounded by more than just human losses. Ukrainian strikes continue to damage Russian oil refineries and data centers. In addition, Ukrainian forces have reportedly regained control of more than 125 square kilometers of territory through ground operations.
Military spending is adding further pressure to the Russian economy. According to projections cited, it could approach 17 trillion rubles in 2026, or approximately $199 billion. That is about 40% higher than the initial plan announced by the government in late 2025.
Another estimate of Russian losses in July was given by Pavlo Palisa, deputy head of the Office of the President of Ukraine. He reported that 43,000 Russian troops had been killed or wounded on the battlefield.
The head of the German Federal Intelligence Service (BND), Martin Jäger, previously said that the actions of the Kremlin had put Vladimir Putin in a position where ending the war without political losses was becoming increasingly difficult. The war is against Ukraine, which Russia launched in February 2022.
