Ran to "apologize", then they fought again: the student's strange account of the night stabbing in Mykolaiv

In Mykolaiv a preventive measure was chosen for an 18-year-old college student suspected of intentionally inflicting grievous bodily harm on a 55-year-old man. This concerns Part 1 of Article 121 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

According to the case materials, the incident occurred on the night of September 26, 2026 at the intersection of Soborna Street and Tsentralnyi Avenue. A conflict arose between the 18-year-old youth and the 55-year-old man, which escalated into a fight. According to the investigation, during the clash the young man stabbed the victim in the chest several times. The man was hospitalized with a stab wound to the chest.

The court hearing was held under the presiding investigating judge Halyna Podzyhun, who reviewed the prosecution’s motion to choose a preventive measure.

At the hearing the suspect presented his own version of events. According to him, at around 3:00 he was returning home and met a man who had come out of a building. The youth asked what the man was doing on the street during the curfew. As the suspect claims, in response the man began to behave aggressively, after which a fight broke out between them. Then, according to the young man’s version, the victim began to run away. The suspect ran after him, explaining this by a desire to apologize. However, the conflict, he said, flared up again.

The young man told the court that the man used a forceful physical move on him, which caused him severe pain. After that, he said, he took out a knife and inflicted several blows. After the incident the men, the suspect said, even tried to reconcile. The victim allegedly suggested having a drink together, but on the way a dispute arose between them again, after which the youth went home.

The defense attorney asked the court not to impose pre-trial detention on her client and to choose a milder preventive measure — house arrest. At the same time, after hearing the parties’ positions and examining the materials of the motion, the court ruled to remand the suspect in custody.

At the same time Halyna Podzyhun set the possibility of release from custody upon payment of bail in the amount of 266 240 hryvnias.

Earlier the police reported that the suspect was identified after analyzing surveillance camera recordings, including the “Safe City” system. During a search of his residence law enforcement officers seized a knife and other physical evidence.
