Grandmother beat her three-year-old granddaughter in a supermarket in Mykolaiv Oblast

In Voznesensk a court found a woman guilty of beating her three-year-old granddaughter in a supermarket. The incident was recorded by surveillance cameras, and the video released on social media caused significant public outcry. The verdict of the Voznesensk City District Court of Mykolaiv Oblast was published in the Unified State Register of Court Decisions.

The incident occurred on July 23 in the sales area of the “TRASH” store on Kyivska Street. During the conflict the grandmother struck the girl on the buttocks with her palm four times, and then three more times on the face.

In court the woman fully admitted her guilt and expressed remorse. She explained her actions by saying that the child systematically disobeyed her, which caused her to lose her temper.

The examination did not find any bodily injuries on the girl. At the same time, the court concluded that the blows caused the child physical pain.

The woman was found guilty under Part 1 of Article 126 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. Her actions were qualified as intentional infliction of blows, battery, or other violent acts that caused physical pain but did not result in bodily injuries. The punishment was a fine in the amount of 850 hryvnias.

After the incident local residents circulated the video from the store, trying to identify the woman and bring her to justice. After the publicity, workers of the child protection service and law enforcement became involved.

That same evening at around 23:00 they went to the child’s place of residence. The girl was removed from the family and temporarily placed in a safe location.

It turned out that the girl’s mother was abroad, and the child had been under her grandmother’s care. After the incident the mother returned promptly, and after a conversation social workers handed the child back to her.
