In the morning of 24 September 2026 a knife attack occurred on the grounds of the Jarosław Abbey in the town of Jarosław in southeastern Poland. According to official information from the Subcarpathian police, a 31-year-old citizen of Ukraine wounded four men and a woman, after which he was detained by law enforcement.
The police received a report about the attack on Benedictine Street in Jarosław at around 9:30. Initially officers were informed of an attack on one man on the grounds of the Jarosław Abbey.
When police arrived at the scene, they detained a 31-year-old foreign national. According to preliminary investigation data, a few minutes earlier the man had stabbed four men and a woman. All the injured were taken to hospital; three of the men suffered serious injuries. It later emerged that one of the injured priests had died. According to Polish media, among the five attacked were three clergymen and two laypeople.
The attack took place shortly before Mass. Polish law enforcement are currently establishing the exact course of events and the attacker’s motives. The official police statement confirms the detention of a 31-year-old citizen of Ukraine, but at the time of first publication authorities had not yet reported a motive for the crime.
According to Polish investigators, the man arrived in Poland from Germany. Authorities also need to check, in particular, whether he was under the influence of drugs.
The Embassy of Ukraine in Poland condemned the attack. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also responded to the tragedy, expressed his condolences to the family and relatives of the deceased, and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
“A horrific crime at the Benedictine nuns’ abbey in Jarosław, committed by a citizen of Ukraine. Shocked by this evil. We express our deepest condolences to the family and relatives of the deceased. We wish a speedy recovery to all the injured. The perpetrator of this evil must bear full responsibility under the law. We expect a prompt and thorough investigation,” the President said.
The detainee is currently in custody, and Polish law enforcement continue to establish all the circumstances of the attack. The Subcarpathian police emphasize that the investigation is at an initial stage.
