23 September left very different pages in the history of Mykolaiv: the end of one of the city’s most terrible Nazi actions, a Mykolaiv ship entering service, projects for the Korabelnyi District, hundreds of applications to restore war‑damaged housing and a farewell to a man who spent decades greening the district.
23 September 1941: the Nazis shot Mykolaiv women and children
After the occupation of Mykolaiv, the Jewish population of the city was ordered to gather near the old Jewish cemetery allegedly for relocation. On 21 September 1941 the Nazis began to deport and shoot men, and on 22–23 September — women and children. People were killed in the ravines between Voskresenskyi and Kalynivka; the research compilation by Boris Zabarko indicates more than 6,000 killed. In a piece on “Корабелів.Інфо” we previously cited researchers’ estimates ranging from 3,500 to 7,000 victims.
23 September 1972: Mykolaiv’s “Skory” entered service
The large anti‑submarine ship “Skory” of Project 61, built at the plant named after the 61 Communar in Mykolaiv, entered service on 23 September 1972. She was laid down on 20 April 1970, launched on 26 February 1971, and on 31 October 1972 was included in the composition of the Black Sea Fleet. The ship had a length of 144 metres and a full displacement of 4,390 tonnes.
23 September 2021: among the winners of the public budget — 10 projects for Korabelnyi
On this day the results of voting for the Mykolaiv participatory budget for 2022 became known: among the 40 winning projects, as many as 10 related to the Korabelnyi District, reported “Корабелів.Інфо”. Among them was a project to install the park sculpture “Vitovsky Knight” in Vitovsky square costing 1 million UAH. The announcement referred specifically to the selection of winners and planned funding, not the completion of these projects.
23 September 2024: 771 requests from Korabelnyi about war‑damaged housing
“Корабелів.Інфо” reported that as of 20 September 2024 the commission in the Korabelnyi District of Mykolaiv had received 771 requests under the “єВідновлення” program concerning property damaged as a result of Russian aggression. By that time 707 requests had been processed — regarding 342 houses and 365 apartments, with 64 still in progress.
23 September 2025: Mykolaiv said goodbye to Vadym Andriyovych Serdtsev
In Mykolaiv on that day a farewell took place for the well‑known greening specialist from the Korabelnyi District, Vadym Andriyovych Serdtsev. During his life he planted more than 20,000 trees and shrubs in the city. The Mykolaiv City Council notes that for over 40 years he selflessly worked on greening Mykolaiv; in 2019 he was awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of the city.

On 23 September 1872 Solomiya Amvrosiivna Krushelnytska was born — the world‑famous Ukrainian opera singer, public figure and teacher; this date is commemorated by the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory. And on 23 September 1846 the German astronomer Johann Gottfried Galle discovered Neptune — the planet was found almost exactly where its position had been previously predicted by mathematical calculations.
Such a varied 23 September in the history of Mykolaiv and the Korabelnyi District: from the tragedy of the Holocaust and shipbuilding history to the traces of the modern war and the memory of a man whose trees still grow on the district’s streets today.
