In Mykolaiv, the municipal enterprise “ELU Avtodorih” is eliminating emergency potholes on key transport arteries. Due to a shortage of budget funding and rising material costs, road workers have focused on critical sections with the heaviest traffic loads.

The director of the enterprise, Vitalii Shevchenko, told the MART TV channel that the estimated need for 2026 was about UAH 170 million. Such funding would have allowed maintaining the city’s roads at the previous year’s level, but initially only UAH 74 million was allocated from the budget.

“The need this year was marked at approximately UAH 170 million to maintain all the city’s roads. But when the new budget year came, we received roughly half of that need, namely UAH 74 million. In addition, we faced the issue of rising fuel, bitumen, and overall logistics costs. Moreover, our winter was very cold — we had frost for 64 days in a row, both day and night, there were many freeze–thaw cycles. So this year it is not just a challenge, it is a catastrophic situation for coverage,” — noted Vitalii Shevchenko.

Because of the lack of funds, the city is not currently carrying out major or large-scale current repairs. Available resources are being directed toward locally filling emergency potholes.

During the August session of the Mykolaiv City Council, the enterprise was additionally allocated UAH 28 million. Of this amount, about UAH 5 million is planned to be spent directly on purchasing asphalt concrete.

The volume of asphalt paving will also decrease. Last year the enterprise used 4.5–5 thousand tonnes, while this year the expected maximum is about 3 thousand tonnes.

Asphalt will primarily be laid on heavily loaded arterial streets and avenues:

  • Central Avenue;
  • Bohoyavlenskyi Avenue;
  • Kherson Highway;
  • Kosmonavtiv Street;
  • Sadova Street;
  • Nikolska Street.
