Ten more used carriages from Gothenburg are expected by the end of the year
Free Trams from Sweden: Mykolaiv Plans to Receive 40 Cars
Mykolaiv plans to add 40 trams from the Swedish city of Gothenburg to its fleet in 2027–2028. Another 10 trams are expected to be delivered to the city in 2027. These plans were announced by the Mykolaiv City Council.
The first M29 tram from this batch arrived in the city on November 2. The transfer of the trams resulted from cooperation between Mykolaiv and its partners in Gothenburg. The city does not have to pay for the trams themselves, and the Swedish side is also covering all transportation costs.
Before the tram arrived, specialists from Mykolaivelektrotrans Municipal Enterprise visited Sweden. There, they studied the trams’ technical features, maintenance procedures, and preparations for service.
The tram cannot be put into service without modifications because the track gauges differ. As explained by Yurii Smetana, director of Mykolaivelektrotrans Municipal Enterprise, Swedish trams are designed for the European standard gauge of 1,435 millimeters, while the gauge in Mykolaiv is 1,524 millimeters. Before the tram enters service, its wheelsets must be replaced, technical inspections carried out, and the tram tested on city routes.
The city must first adapt the tram to the local tracks. Only then will the remaining trams begin to arrive.
“I thank our partners and the employees of ‘Mykolaivelektrotrans’ who went to Sweden, saw how the trams could be modified, and received positive feedback about further cooperation. I hope that this tram will be running on the tracks in the city of Mykolaiv in the near future,” said Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych.
