15 September in the Dobrenska community in Mykolaiv region the police discovered weapons in the house and outbuildings of a 47-year-old local resident. The man was detained, charged, and all seized items were sent for expert examination.

A 43-year-old woman appealed to the Bashtanske District Police Department about domestic violence. She reported that her husband, while intoxicated, behaved aggressively and threatened with explosive devices. At the scene, police determined that the spouses had a conflict rooted in family relations, and later received information about possible illegal storage of weapons.

During an urgent search of the suspect’s residence, law enforcement officers seized:

  • two RGD-5 grenade bodies with fuzes;
  • 339 rounds of various calibers;
  • parts of an assault rifle;
  • five explosive devices.

Employees of the police Explosive Ordnance Disposal service removed the dangerous items observing necessary safety measures. Investigators handed everything found to experts. According to the man, he found the weapons and decided to keep them.

The suspect was detained in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. Under the procedural guidance of the prosecutor’s office he was notified of suspicion under Part 1 of Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — for the illegal acquisition, carrying, storage, transfer or sale of firearms, ammunition, explosive substances or explosive devices without the permit required by law.

The article’s sanction provides for up to seven years imprisonment. A court will soon decide on the suspect’s preventive measure. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.

Police reminded that under Part 3 of Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine a person is exempt from criminal liability if they voluntarily surrender to authorities weapons, ammunition, explosive substances or explosive devices that came into their possession in any way. Unregistered weapons and ammunition can be handed in at the nearest police station, and any such finds reported to the emergency line 102.
