The number of in-person schools in Mykolaiv decreased from 45 to 26 in two weeks

As of September 14 in Mykolaiv, 26 schools operate in person, another 26 use a blended format, and 12 teach children remotely. The organization of the educational process was changed after an adaptation period at the beginning of the new school year.

The head of the Department of Education, Hanna Lychko, spoke about the work of city schools under martial law during a briefing. According to her, this school year has become more difficult than previous ones, and the format of institutions’ work primarily depends on safety.

Among the main challenges she named an increase in the number and duration of air-raid alerts, limited shelter capacity, and the risk of lesson interruptions.

In August some had about 15 alerts. And it became clear that the format used last school year no longer fits, — said Hanna Lychko.

Because of this, educators changed the format and the algorithm for organizing learning. The first week of the new school year was made adaptive.

Specialists checked whether full lessons were being held, how effectively schools use shelter capacity, and how best to distribute students. If initial decisions required changes, they acted according to the following algorithm:

• assessed the situation;
• made decisions;
• organized the work;
• monitored the result.

After monitoring, the ratio of learning formats changed noticeably. As of September 1, pedagogical councils agreed on in-person work for 45 schools, blended — for 7, remote — for 12.

On September 14 Mykolaiv schools operate in the following formats:

• in person — 26 institutions;
• blended — 26 institutions;
• remotely — 12 institutions.

For comparison, on September 7 the in-person format was used by 31 institutions, and blended — by 21. The number of schools with remote learning did not change.

Due to limited shelter capacity, some institutions switched to a special regime:

• among schools with in-person learning, 6 institutions operate in two shifts;
• in the blended format, learning in two shifts was organized in 14 institutions;
• in 1 more institution, students study in a relief shift.

On September 1, more than 32.6 thousand students began studies. This is 2,456 children fewer than in the previous school year.

The city Department of Education reported that they continue to adjust the organization of schools’ work to increase children’s safety while at the same time preventing a decline in the quality of education.
