A resident of one of the villages of the Synyushynobrid community was sentenced to nine years of imprisonment for intentionally inflicting grievous bodily harm that resulted in the death of his 24-year-old partner. The incident occurred on the evening of 2 March this year in the Pervomaisk area.

As law enforcement officers established, the 33-year-old serviceman, who had absented himself from his military unit and was living with the victim, was intoxicated. During an argument rooted in jealousy, he struck the woman numerous times with a wooden bat across her body. The injuries proved incompatible with life — the victim died at the scene.

After that, the man attempted to conceal traces of the crime: he hid in the house items bearing traces of blood and the bat. To operators of the emergency line 102 he gave a fabricated account, claiming that his common‑law wife had returned home late in the evening intoxicated and with multiple injuries, explained nothing, went to bed, and later died. According to that version, the injuries had allegedly been inflicted by an unknown person.

Officers of the Pervomaisk District Police Department reconstructed the sequence of events and established the man’s involvement. He was then detained in accordance with procedural rules and was notified of suspicion of causing intentional grievous bodily harm that led to the victim’s death. The court ordered his pretrial detention.

In July this year investigators completed the pretrial investigation and transferred the indictment to the prosecutor’s office, which forwarded it to the court for consideration on the merits.

The court found the defendant guilty of the criminal offense provided for in Part 2 of Article 121 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — intentional grievous bodily harm that caused the victim’s death. He was sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment.

The verdict has not yet come into legal force. According to Article 532 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine, the first-instance court’s decision will take effect after the expiration of the appeal period if no appeal is filed. If an appeal is filed, the verdict, unless overturned, will take effect after the appellate court’s decision.

Procedural supervision in the case was exercised by the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Defense of the Southern Region.
