September 9 in the history of Mykolaiv and the Korabelnyi District brought together the round-the-world voyage of the yacht “Ikar”, the memory of the first director of MGZ, a dramatic chapter of the “Okean” shipyard, the port workers’ football triumph, City Day by the damaged Palace of Culture “Korabelnyi”, and the awarding of athletes from SC “Vodoliy”.
9 September 1987: Mykolaiv’s “Ikar” set off on a round-the-world voyage
From Mykolaiv the yacht “Ikar” departed on a round-the-world voyage with a crew of 7 people under the command of Borys Stepanovych Nemyrov. The Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine confirms that this was the first round-the-world yacht voyage in the USSR, and Mykolaiv local historians note that the crew covered about 31,000 nautical miles, passing through the Canary Islands, Tasmania, Cape Horn and Saint Helena Island.
9 September 2001: a monument to Mykola Pavlovych Leontovych unveiled near the zoo
On the 100th anniversary of the Mykolaiv Zoo the reconstructed square and a monument to its founder Mykola Pavlovych Leontovych were ceremonially unveiled. The zoo’s official history tells that the authors of the monument were Inna Makushina, Yuriy Makushin and Viktor Makushin; during that jubilee period the city also hosted an international conference attended by representatives of zoos from different countries.
9 September 2016: a plaque to the first director of MGZ was unveiled in Korabelnyi
At the building at Prospekt Korabeliv, 20/3, a memorial plaque to the first director and builder of the Mykolaiv Alumina Plant, Yevhen Mykolayovych Bespalov, was ceremonially unveiled. Korabelov.info showed the ceremony and reminded readers that with his involvement the Korabelnyi District saw the construction of schools, kindergartens, housing, social facilities and infrastructure related to the development of the MGZ.
9 September 2016: the court seized property of the “Okean” shipyard
The Pechersky District Court of Kyiv placed a seizure on the movable and immovable property of the Mykolaiv Shipbuilding Plant “Okean”. Korabelov.info later reported on the situation around the enterprise. In November 2016 the Kyiv Court of Appeal annulled the decision insofar as it concerned transferring the property into responsible custody.
9 September 2021: port side “Olvia” crushed their opponent 9:2
On the field of the “Zorya” sports complex the football team “Olvia”, representing the state enterprise stevedoring company “Olvia” located in the Korabelnyi District, played against Dream Team in the Mykolaiv championship. The port workers were already leading 6:0 after the first half and finished the match with nine goals scored; Korabelov.info called “Olvia” the champion of the city’s first league.
9 September 2022: Mykolaiv commemorated Volodymyr Yuriyovych Puchkov
In the Literary Square near the Central City Library named after M. L. Kropyvnytskyi a memorial plaque was unveiled to the poet, translator, honored journalist of Ukraine and long-time chief editor of the newspaper “Vechirniy Mykolaiv” Volodymyr Yuriyovych Puchkov. The Mykolaiv Regional Library notes that the plaque’s author was sculptor Ivan Bulavytskyi, and it was installed beside a birch tree that the journalist himself had once planted.
9 September 2023: Korabelnyi celebrated City Day by the damaged Palace of Culture
Residents of the Korabelnyi District gathered in the inner courtyard of the Palace of Culture “Korabelnyi” for a concert on City Day. At the start of the event the State Flag of Ukraine was brought out, the national anthem was performed and a minute of silence was observed to honor the dead. Korabelov.info showed how the celebration took place next to the part of the Palace of Culture damaged by Russian shelling.
9 September 2023: athletes from “Vodoliy” were awarded, and Danylo Konovalov received 100,000 UAH
In Mykolaiv leading athletes and coaches of the diving department of the Youth Sports School KDYuSSh “Ukraine”, based at the SC “Vodoliy” in the Korabelnyi District, were honored. They were presented with the “Saint Nicholas the Miracle Worker” Order III degree and letters of gratitude, and two-time champion of the III European Games Danylo Konovalov received a monetary reward of 100,000 UAH.

9 September 1769 by the modern calendar in Poltava Ivan Petrovych Kotliarevsky was born — a writer, playwright and the founder of modern Ukrainian literature. The Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance reminds that his “Eneida” became the first work of the new Ukrainian literature written in the living vernacular. Sources also give his birth date as 29 August 1769 old style.
September 9 proved to be eventful for Mykolaiv and especially the Korabelnyi District: the round-the-world “Ikar”, the man who stood at the origins of the MGZ, the complex history of “Okean”, port football, athletes of “Vodoliy” and City Day, which even war could not cancel.
