28 August combined in the history of the Korabelnyi District and Mykolaiv shipbuilding, port investment, a temperature record and long-awaited fresh water. On this day the Okean plant launched immediately three barges, and the city water system received the first 5000 m³ of water.
28 August 1853: the author of Mykolaiv’s water tower was born
16 August Old Style, or 28 August by the modern calendar, engineer Vladimir Shukhov was born in the town of Graivoron. According to his design, the well-known 32-meter hyperboloid water tower in Mykolaiv was built; it was put into operation in 1907.
28 August 1983: the cruiser “Chervona Ukraina” was launched in Mykolaiv
At the 61 Communar shipyard they launched the Project 1164 missile cruiser, laid down under the name “Chervona Ukraina.” After the collapse of the USSR the ship went to Russia, and in 1996 it was renamed “Varyag.”
28 August 2009: “Okean” launched three barges for “Nibulon”
At the Okean shipyard in the Korabelnyi District they launched and handed over to the customer three non-self-propelled dry-cargo barges. Each was 90 meters long, 16 meters wide, and the cargo-hold capacity was about 5800 m³.
28 August 2019: the concession project for the port “Olvia” started
The Ministry of Infrastructure issued order No.669 announcing a concession competition for the specialized port “Olvia.” The winner was the Qatari company QTerminals, with which a 35-year contract was later signed: it provided for about 3.4 billion UAH of investment in the port and at least 80 million UAH in Mykolaiv city infrastructure.
28 August 2023: temperature in Mykolaiv rose to +38.5°C
The Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center recorded a temperature record in Mykolaiv — +38.5°C. The next day the maximum was +38.1°C.
28 August 2025: 5000 m³ of fresh water were pumped into Mykolaiv for the first time
During tests of the new trunk water pipeline into the system of MKP “Mykolaivvodokanal” they pumped the first 5000 m³ of fresh water. This was the first actual supply of water from the new pipeline after the 2022 destruction of the city’s old water-supply system by Russian forces.
28 August 2025: deputies rejected the waste-sorting investor
The Mykolaiv City Council did not support designating the company “Waste to Energy Niko” as an investor and refused to sign a contract for the construction of a sorting line. The company later called the decision the result of political games, and already a year later the city returned to the idea of involving a private sorter.

28 August 1963: the “I Have a Dream” speech was delivered
During the March on Washington, which gathered more than 250,000 participants, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered the famous “I Have a Dream” speech about equality and civil rights.
So it is, 28 August: in Mykolaiv they built ships and launched a water pipeline, set temperature records and once again argued over who and how should sort the city’s trash.
