The keys were left in the ignition: in the Mykolaiv region a VAZ was stolen and sold for parts
The car was seized and returned to its 77-year-old owner
25 August the Voznesensk District Police Department was contacted by a 77-year-old resident of Voznesensk, who reported the disappearance of a VAZ-2101 car. The owner said he had parked the vehicle near his house and left the keys in the ignition. A few hours later he discovered the car was gone.
During initial investigative and operational-search measures, law enforcement officers with the participation of specialists from the regional police department’s criminal analysis unit established the route of the vehicle. For this, in particular, they used surveillance cameras of the “Safe City” subsystem. Within a day the police located the stolen VAZ and the man involved in the unlawful seizure of the vehicle.
The suspect turned out to be a 44-year-old resident of Voznesensk. He had previously come to the attention of law enforcement for an offense related to the illegal circulation of weapons. According to the police, the stolen car was immediately sold for parts by the man for 100 US dollars.
Investigators detained him in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. The car was seized, the necessary procedural actions were carried out and returned to the owner.
Under the procedural guidance of the prosecutor’s office, investigators notified the detainee of suspicion under Part 1 of Article 289 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — unlawful seizure of a vehicle. The penalty under the article provides for up to 5 years imprisonment with confiscation of property.
The court will soon determine a preventive measure for the suspect. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
