In Ukraine, authorities plan to introduce penalty points for drivers and install an additional 600 cameras
The Ministry of Internal Affairs has already restored the operation of the "Phantom" patrol cars
Ukraine plans to introduce a penalty points system for drivers and significantly expand the network of automated violation-detection cameras. This was stated during a plenary session of the Verkhovna Rada by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Ivan Vygovskyi.
According to the minister, the penalty points system was discussed at an RNBO meeting. It included representatives of the Committee on Law Enforcement, members of parliament, and the public.
Ivan Vygovskyi expressed support for this idea.
I think we support this idea. It needs to be implemented
The first steps to strengthen enforcement of speed limits have already been taken: an additional 50 violation-detection cameras have come into operation. At the same time, according to the minister, about 600 more such devices need to be installed to fully cover all dangerous stretches.
In addition, the Ministry of Internal Affairs has resumed the operation of special patrol vehicles «Phantom». Externally they are indistinguishable from regular cars, but they can automatically record speeding directly in the traffic flow.
The MIA’s immediate plans include launching at least three such vehicles within a month and purchasing additional «Phantoms».
Right now we plan to launch at least three within a month and soon purchase more of these «Phantoms»
The article also reminded about the possible introduction in Ukraine of double liability for drivers under the penalty points system.
