Fatal blow near a supermarket: 23-year-old man from Mykolaiv taken into custody

In Mykolaiv the court chose a preventive measure for a 23-year-old man suspected of inflicting serious bodily injuries that caused the death of an 18-year-old young man. He was taken into custody without the right to post bail. The decision was made on 19 August 2026 at the request of the District Prosecutor’s Office of the city of Mykolaiv. The Inhulskyi District Court sent the suspect into custody for 60 days — until 5 October 2026. The ruling can be appealed within five days.

According to the Mykolaiv region police, the incident occurred on 17 August at about 00:35 near one of the supermarkets on Kosmonavtiv Street in the Inhulskyi district. According to the investigation, a conflict suddenly arose between two young men and an 18-year-old young man unknown to them. One of the men struck the young man in the head area. The victim fell to the ground and lost consciousness. Medics tried to resuscitate the youth, but from the sustained injuries he died on the spot. The case materials name the cause of death as a closed traumatic brain injury with cerebral edema.

After the incident two young men fled, but patrol police soon found them nearby. the 23-year-old man was detained in accordance with Art. 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. At the court hearing the suspect admitted guilt, expressed remorse and stated his readiness to compensate the deceased’s parents for damages. The defense asked to set bail in the amount of 266,240 hryvnias, however the court sided with the prosecution and ordered detention without bail.

The man was notified of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 121 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — intentional grievous bodily injury that caused the victim’s death. The article’s penalty provides for seven to ten years of imprisonment. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
