In Mykolaiv Oblast, 264 educational institutions plan to open for in-person learning
The format of classes will depend on shelter availability and the security situation
In Mykolaiv Oblast, preparations for the start of the 2026/2027 academic year at educational institutions are ongoing. It is preliminarily planned that 414 institutions will operate, but the final format of learning will be determined taking into account the security situation and the readiness of shelters.
The issue of preparing schools and other educational institutions was considered on August 18 by the standing committee of the Mykolaiv Regional Council. The meeting was attended by the deputy head of the regional council Denys Andriiev, the committee chair Yevhen Horburov, deputies and the Director of the Department of Education and Science of the Mykolaiv Oblast Military Administration Alla Velikhovska.
According to preliminary calculations, educational institutions will operate in the following formats:
- 264 — in-person;
- 107 — in a hybrid format;
- 41 — remotely.
Before the start of the school year, institutions undergo comprehensive inspections. Specialists first assess the condition of shelters and their compliance with established requirements. It is only after receiving the necessary conclusions that the format in which a particular institution can operate will be determined.
The region is also preparing backup power sources: institutions are being equipped with generators and energy storage systems. The preparation of school buses was also discussed separately at the meeting. In some communities, there remains a problem of driver shortages.
Students who are at an educational institution for more than four hours must receive at least one hot meal. Communities have already received a state subsidy for organizing meals, and school catering facilities are undergoing the necessary inspections for compliance with requirements.
During consideration of the issue, deputies also drew attention to the staffing shortage. Educators most lack teachers of natural science and mathematics subjects and practical psychologists. To attract young specialists, following the discussion, it is necessary to create proper working conditions, ensure decent pay and social guarantees.
The committee recognized the work of the Department of Education and Science of the Mykolaiv Oblast Military Administration in preparing the region’s institutions for the new school year and the autumn-winter period as sufficient. At the same time, the department was given recommendations to complete the preparation of institutions, strengthen child safety, organize quality meals and ensure the normal conduct of the educational process.
Earlier it was reported that in Mykolaiv more schools may switch to remote learning.
