A pump, a generator and "going AWOL": in Mykolaiv a series of misadventures cost a 24-year-old man 6 years

The court sentenced a 24-year-old city resident to six years in prison

Central District Court of Mykolaiv found a 24-year-old resident of the city, previously convicted multiple times, guilty of theft committed under martial law and of unauthorized desertion from a military unit. For the combined criminal offenses, the man was sentenced to 6 years of imprisonment.

The court established that in May 2025 the man was in a supermarket on Heroes of Ukraine Avenue. He took a portable speaker from a shelf, did not pay for the item, and left the store.

Another crime occurred in the evening in February 2026 near the service entrance to a restaurant on Admiralska Street in Mykolaiv. There the man saw a generator left near the entrance, took it, and disappeared. The equipment’s value exceeded 25 thousand hryvnias.

The indictment also stated that in February 2024 the man unauthorizedly left his place of military service. According to him, he was serving under a contract.

During the court hearing the defendant fully admitted guilt and did not dispute the facts of the thefts. He explained that he moved the generator to a garage and later handed it over to another person. After the police arrived, the generator was handed over to law enforcement.

The court concluded that guilt was proven under Part 4 of Article 185 and Part 5 of Article 407 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The case was heard under the chairmanship of Judge Tetiana Fortuna.
