8 August in the history of Mykolaiv combined port strikes, shipbuilding, the memory of a defender from Balabanivka, Russian shelling and a more peaceful “Kavunnik” in the Korabelnyi district.
8 August 1913: the strike of loaders at the Mykolaiv grain port ended
From 1 to 8 August 1913 in Mykolaiv there was an economic strike of loader-workers of the grain port: they demanded an increase in pay for unloading one pood of grain from a wagon by 1.5 kopeks, and from the warehouse — by 1 kopek. The Institute of History of Ukraine recorded that the conflict ended with a compromise, however the new agreement for the next year was concluded on the previous terms. In the old style this period corresponded to 19–26 July 1913.
8 August 2011: the tug “NIBULON-2” was launched from the dock of the “Okean” plant
At the shipbuilding plant “Okean” in the Korabelnyi district of Mykolaiv, on 8 August 2011 the dry dock launched the tug-pusher “NIBULON-2”, built on order for the company “NIBULON”. It was the second vessel in a planned series of 12 tugs; after the launch the installation of equipment and mechanisms continued aboard it.
8 August 2016: marine from Balabanivka Serhiy Prostyakov died
On 8 August 2016 34-year-old Serhiy Serhiyovych Prostyakov died — a resident of Balabanivka, a graduate of school No.49 and a serviceman of the 36th Separate Marine Brigade. He died from severe injuries sustained on 3 August 2016 while carrying out a combat mission in Donetsk region. In 2021 a memorial plaque in his honor was unveiled on the building of his native school in the Korabelnyi district.
8 August 2022: Russian forces shelled the outskirts of Mykolaiv again
Around 04:30 on 8 August 2022 Russian forces shelled the outskirts of Mykolaiv. According to preliminary information, there were no deaths or injuries. The day before, on 7 August, the Korabelnyi district was hit by heavy tube artillery of 152 mm caliber.
8 August 2024: a “Kavunnik” was held in Korabelnyi
In the evening of 8 August 2024 on Novobudivna Street in the Korabelnyi district of Mykolaiv they held the family sports competition “Kavunnik”. 6 teams of 6 participants each competed for the victory, and the winner was “Uragan”.

8 August 2008 marked the start of large-scale Russian military aggression against Georgia. The Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance notes that over the following 5 days Russian aviation carried out more than 100 strikes on Georgian towns and villages, and later Moscow recognized the “independence” of the occupied Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
That was 8 August for Mykolaiv: from the struggle of port workers and the work of the shipbuilders of “Okean” to war, the memory of a defender from Balabanivka and the peaceful life of the Korabelnyi district.
