5 August in the history of the Korabelnyi District and Mykolaiv left different events: the city’s capture by Denikin’s forces, a temperature record, a youth quest, a rescue of a person on the beach, and one of the heaviest Russian attacks on the district.

5 August 1919 old style: Denikin’s forces captured Mykolaiv

In local history publications the capture of Mykolaiv by the Volunteer Army under the command of Yakov Aleksandrovich Slashchov is dated 5 August 1919 according to the Julian calendar. By the modern Gregorian calendar this is 18 August 1919 — this is the date cited by the State Archive of Mykolaiv Oblast. Denikin’s authorities restored the old city council and launched reprisals; this period ended on 31 January 1920, when the Red Army entered the city.

5 August 2010: a record +37.9°C was recorded in Mykolaiv

The temperature record for this calendar date in Mykolaiv was set in 2010, when the air warmed to +37.9°C. These data were previously published by the Mykolaiv Hydrometeorological Center in the publication “Korabeliv.Info”.

5 August 2012: the Korabelnyi District was turned into a large quest

In the Korabelnyi District a youth game “Korablevnyi.Quest” was held, whose participants completed 11 tasks related to the history and landmarks of the district. The team “_Vips_” consisting of Dmytro Varakuta, Vladyslav Yunkov and Olena Varakuta won.

5 August 2014: separatist leaflets were slipped into mailboxes

Residents of the Korabelnyi District found double-sided A4 leaflets in mailboxes with calls for violent overthrow of the authorities and division of Ukraine, signed by the “Coordination Center “Novaya Rus’””.

5 August 2017: a man was rescued at the “Chaika” beach

Around 16:40 children noticed an unconscious man in the water and called a rescuer. The victim was pulled ashore, given first aid and brought back to consciousness, after which he was handed over to ambulance medics.

5 August 2022: Russians shelled Balabanivka and the Korabelnyi District

At night the Korabelnyi District was attacked with cluster munitions from MLRS, in the morning — with artillery “Pion”, and during the day residential neighborhoods and Balabanivka were hit. 1 person was killed, 22 residents were wounded, including a 13-year-old boy; 21 private houses, 5 apartment buildings and 2 enterprises were damaged. That same evening in Mykolaiv a long curfew was introduced — from 23:00 on 5 August to 05:00 on 8 August.

On this day in Ukraine and the world

5 August 1941 the defense of Odesa began, which lasted until 16 October 1941. And on 5 August 1963 in Moscow representatives of the USSR, the USA and Great Britain signed the treaty banning nuclear tests in the atmosphere, outer space and under water.

For residents of the Korabelnyi District the most painful page of this date remains 5 August 2022, when Russian strikes took human life, wounded dozens of people and damaged residential neighborhoods.
