From Mykolaiv to the world podium: Alina Polozyuk's historic success

A product of the Mykolaiv sports fencing school, Alina Poloziuk won a bronze medal at the World Championships in the women’s individual foil. The Mykolaiv City Council reported the athlete’s historic result on July 27, 2026.

The world championship is being held from July 22 to 30 in Hong Kong. In the individual foil tournament 132 athletes from 51 countries competed. On her way to the podium the Mykolaiv fencer defeated China’s representative Huang Qianqian, and in the next round beat the junior world vice-champion Adeline Senic from Moldova with a score of 10:9.

In the quarterfinals Poloziuk faced the decorated Italian Martina Batini. The Ukrainian won the bout with a score of 15:9, securing herself a World Championship medal. In the semifinal Alina lost to Italy’s Olympic champion Arianna Errigo — 7:15, finishing the individual event with the bronze medal.

The medal of 24-year-old Alina Poloziuk became the first in Ukraine’s history World Championship medal in the women’s individual foil. It also gave the Ukrainian national team its first medal at this year’s world championships.

The Mykolaiv City Council congratulated the athlete, her coaching staff and the team, emphasizing that the result was the culmination of many years of work, discipline and willpower.
