Maritime exports at risk: shipowners have suspended calls to Ukrainian ports

The entry of ships into Ukrainian ports 22 July 2026 was suspended, although just the day before four to five ships. The decision was made by the shipowners themselves, while the state imposed no restrictions on navigation. This was reported by Latifundist with reference to a statement by the Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine Taras Vysotsky during talks with journalists.

“As of yesterday four to five ships were entering the ports. It’s not many, but there was traffic. As of today the entry of ships has been suspended. This is the shipowners’ decision — the state on its part did not impose any restrictions”, — the minister said.

According to Vysotsky, the stable operation of the maritime corridor is a matter of national security. The government is preparing measures to restore navigation, but their details will be published after all proposals are agreed.

The minister emphasized that the current situation is different from the complete cessation of maritime connections at the start of the full-scale war. Ukraine has alternative routes via the Danube ports, railways and dry ports, which are currently not fully loaded.

How long the pause will last is not yet known. After a sharp rise in risks, shipowners usually suspend movement, assess the situation, and later resume operations taking into account the new circumstances.

Vysotsky noted that the suspension of ship entries has lasted only four days, so so far it does not have a critical impact on overall export volumes. At the same time, the situation is already affecting market participants’ sentiment and may cause price fluctuations.

“One day or even a week without shipments will not affect annual volumes. The real impact will be if such a situation lasts for several months”, — he explained.

To agricultural producers who have sufficient storage space for the harvest and do not need urgent funds, the minister advised not to rush to sell grain. According to him, the market’s first reaction to a deterioration is often panic, which causes purchase prices to fall. At the same time Vysotsky did not call for a complete halt to sales, since domestic consumption remains, and agricultural exports continue via other routes.
