Phone connects to space: Viber, WhatsApp and Google Maps can now work via Starlink
Ukrainians will be able to send messages on Viber and WhatsApp and use Google Maps even in places without regular mobile network coverage
Kyivstar has opened test access to Light Data for subscribers — a new stage in the development of Starlink Direct to Cell technology that allows staying connected even in places without a terrestrial mobile network.
This is not just satellite SMS, which already worked before. From June 15, subscribers can test data transmission via Starlink satellites for certain apps. At launch, Viber, WhatsApp and Google Maps are available.
This is especially important during prolonged blackouts, trips to remote places, work in the field, in the mountains or in locations where ordinary base stations do not operate or are damaged. For Mykolaiv and the surrounding region, which have repeatedly faced communication disruptions due to Russian attacks and power outages, such technology can become not just a convenience but a matter of safety.
In Light Data mode, apps adapt to the satellite communication channel. Subscribers can send text messages, geolocation, images, GIF animations, stickers and emoji, and also use maps and navigation.
At the same time, this is not a full replacement for mobile internet. The technology works in a special lightweight mode for services that can transmit small amounts of data. Video calls over this channel are not yet declared as a primary capability.
The launch of the new mode was commented on by Kyivstar CEO Oleksandr Komarov, who emphasized that subscribers are getting an additional means of communication in critical situations.
“Now subscribers have even more ways to communicate: even where there is no coverage, they can write in messengers, stay connected and use navigation”.
To use satellite communication, you need to be outdoors in a place where there is no terrestrial mobile coverage. The smartphone must “see” the satellite and connect to the Kyivstar | SpaceX or SAT network.
Currently Light Data is available for Android smartphones with 4G/LTE support. Kyivstar reports that it continues to work on expanding support for other smartphone manufacturers, including Apple.
The service is available within certain tariff plans or via the Superpower “There is connection”. If a subscriber already uses other Superpowers, they can connect an additional “There is connection” package.
At the same time, satellite SMS remain available at no additional cost under the current plans for Kyivstar subscribers.
The technology operates in the territory of Ukraine, except for temporarily occupied territories, border zones and combat areas. In border areas the signal may be limited due to regulators’ requirements so as not to create interference for operators in neighboring countries.
For people this means a simple thing: if there is no mobile tower nearby or the network has disappeared after an outage, shelling or power shutdown, a smartphone can connect directly to a satellite — without a separate antenna, terminal or router.
